AUTISM AWARENESS

autismaware
An autistic child’s vision of the world is very different to most other Children. Autistic children find it extremely hard to communicate verbally and therefore they generally find it hard to socially mix with other children hence why they usually prefer to keep to themselves.

Autism suffers are generally extremely sensitive to sound and can become extremely irritated by certain noises, to the extent where they will sometimes cover their ears to block the noise out.

This sensitivity also extends to tactile, sometimes resulting in a phobia of being physically touched, even gently. Wearing bands or watches can also cause them great discomfort.

Children with autism are often unable to associate physical gestures with emotions e.g. a child without autism knows that when another child smiles at them the other child is happy and is being friendly, whereas an autistic child might not pickup on this. They have difficulty in linking the smile with happiness.

An autistic child also struggles to link words with their actual meaning. This can cause great frustration to the child and is further complicated by the fact that they often are unable to verbalise this frustration.

Autistic children often exhibit strange behavior. They might clap their hands profusely, say specific words repeatedly, become obsessed with certain toys or objects and throw temper tantrums.

Most autistic children like regularity and routine in their lives and often react negatively to changes in their daily life. They prefer to have a regimented scheduled life that remains the same, day in, day out.

Children with autism can display symptoms similar to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients. They will often have to have things around them laid out or positioned in a certain manner. They can become quite disorientated, emotional even, if this arrangement is changed in any way.
